Britt Maren and Derek Orrell’s love story is anything but ordinary and we were lucky enough to hear it firsthand in Montauk (coincidentally the site of their engagement!) Britt, a model from Texas with Swedish roots, has graced the covers of Vogue, opened for Alexander Wang runway shows and appeared in campaigns for countless designers. Derek, a former model turned chef has helmed the kitchens of many notable NYC restaurants including Locanda Verde and Brooklyn’s The Heyward. The two technically first met when both were working as models in Barcelona, however, it was more of a noteworthy day for only one of them as Britt jokes, “it was not a particularly memorable moment for me”. It wasn’t until a few months later that the couple met again when Britt walked into Derek’s NYC apartment by chance and the rest is history, as they say.
Montauk holds meaning to them for many reasons. Derek spent a summer working as a chef at a local restaurant, the two were engaged here, and they often use it as an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city bringing along their puggle, Zeus, to relax for a long weekend. We spent the day with this super fun couple who were nice enough to bring us along to some of their favorite off-season spots including the lighthouse, an old-school drive-in, and a winery. Scroll through for images of the gorgeous couple on a fall day and their romantic guide to Montauk.
Advice for a happy marriage…
Britt: “Always remember y’all are on the same team! And don’t take each other for granted.”
Derek: “Take every chance you can to laugh and smile together.”
“John’s Drive-In is our must-go place every time we are in the Hamptons. Derek loves their good old-fashioned burgers, and we both love the milkshakes!”
“Come by on a weekend for some light bites and a flight of wines. Take your wine out to the gazebo in the middle of the Wölffer vineyard to escape from it all.”

Wölffer Estate – Great wines and beautiful scenery! Come by on a weekend for some light bites and a flight of wines. Take your wine out to the gazebo in the middle of the vineyard to escape from it all.
Hangar Dock (dog park) – Get back to nature at this open grassy area that is right between the water and forest. Zeus, our Puggle, loves running around here! Take a stroll out on the dock or go on a trail run through the forest.
Montauk Lighthouse – Quintessential Montauk pit stop. A definite must-see. Easternmost point of Long Island with beautiful water views.
Seven Ponds Orchard – We love apple picking in the fall! Go early in the fall to get the Honeycrisps before they’re all gone. Great for eating and baking.
