After 3 years of renovation (and 177 million dollars) the St. Patrick’s Cathedral is back just in time for the holidays. The Manhattan architecture firm Murphy Burnham and Buttrick was able to reverse decades of decay, repair 3,600 stained-glass panels, and restore and repaint the plaster-and-lauth vaulted ceilings. Even more impressive are the before and after images of the exterior walls. Decades of soot was removed to reveal a much brighter and cleaner cathedral. Thousands gather every year for Christmas Eve mass which will be especially memorable this year.
